Minor League Player of the Week: 4/4-10/10

The first week of the season is over. I’d like to start doing entries on minor league players as well. So, I will post an entry on a weekly basis on who I think had a stand out performance for the week within the organization. This week’s entry is Trevor May. Trevor May, if you already don’t know, is a 20 year old right handed starting pitcher for the High Class A Clearwater Threshers. May was drafted in the fourth round of the 2008 first year player draft. He spent the 2009 season in Lakewood. May made 15 starts for the BlueClaws in 2009 to the tune of a 4-1 record with a 2.56 ERA. What was impressive was the 95 strikeouts in 77.1 innings pitched. May walked 43 batters, which was a slight disappointment.

Fast foward to 2010 and the reason why May is being named my first minor league player of the week. On April 9th, May made his first start of the season against Dunedin. He only lasted six innings, but it was an impressive six innings. He faced twenty batters. Of those twenty batters, only two made it past the batter’s box. He gave up one hit and one base on balls. Of the remaining 18 batters, May struck out 10. Not one batter that May faced reached second base. So in review, May’s first start was an impressive one. Hopefully, he can repeat performances like this. If he continues to do so, I would not be surprised to see May reach AA Reading by the end of the year. Congratulations, Trevor, you did one heck of a job.
